The Givers and the Crusaders

Some of the children recuperating in a post-operative cardiac care unit are only days old and still don’t have a name. Each nurse works on an eight-hour shift standing in front of the patient’s bed. Shetty believes nursing care to be the most important part of the recovery progress: doctors, after all, make up less than 1% in terms of the time spent with the patient. But he is adamant about not providing chairs to these nurses who “The moment you provide a chair, the efficiency of the nurse goes down by at least 30%. When they are in the ICU, they have to stand so that they are more attentive,” says he. To train these nurses in how to manage heart patients, they built a simulator in-house! The hospital has nearly 1,500 nurses, out of its total head count of 2,400.
