I believe the article has missed pointing the disappearance of retail investor as one of the key drivers in reducing incomes of existing brokerages. If retail investors were coming in full force, these smaller companies would still have good balance sheets and so they in turn could have invested in DMA. The situation will not be as bad a year hence.
