It’s Her Time: Maye Musk (Elon’s mom) is the woman of the hour

There’s never a bad time to be a timeless beauty, but Maye Musk is particularly savouring this moment. Having modelled for more than five decades, the South African beauty finds herself the new platinum standard in the fashion world. In May, she attended her first Met Gala just days after signing on with IMG Models—the same agency that represents Gisele Bündchen. The 68-year-old Musk began her career in the 1960s, at 15, and went on to star in campaigns for Revlon and Clinique. Then she put modelling on the back burner to raise three children, including her son Elon, the billionaire founder of Tesla. (And, yes, he gave her one—a Model S in British racing green.) A single mother, Musk went on to earn two master’s degrees—including one in nutritional science—and supplemented her income as a registered dietician with the occasional photo shoot. “I’m a nerd,” she confesses. “I just wanted to be the best dietician in the world—but then modelling took over.” In part, she says, because she cut her hair short at 60 and let it revert to its natural color: White. “Suddenly I had this great editorial look,” she recalls, and work just took off —including a cameo in a Beyoncé video. So move over, Elon. And welcome to the Mayenaissance.
